The risk of spreading the disease
Autoinoculation (Self reinfection) The virus requires physical contact to spread, and accordingly it is possible for the virus to spread to other points on the infected individual's body. This can occur after the virus presents itself on the hands or fingers ("herpes whitlow") - which can occur via masturbation or simply prodding an infected site. Grooming can also spread the virus, for example via shaving ("herpes barbae"), or simply by rubbing the infected areas vigorously with a towel.
Spreading through casual or indirect contact Various sources provide conflicting information about the possibility of transmission through casual contact, eg. sharing towels, handshakes. However, at least one medical source suggests that such transmission is possible. [25]
