Can women chant the Gayatri mantra?

From last 2 years I am enjoying spiritual life, but I have one basic question on Sanskrit mantra i.e. Gayatri mantra. Can women chant this Gayatri mantra? Some books and some people say this mantra is not made for women. What is actual fact. Can you lighten this fact.
